Oceans of Earth and Beyond

In 1998, investigations took in the shallow water, coral reefs, mid-water and oceanic vertical migration of Bermuda and compared them with the mid-waters of Monterey Bay and the cold seeps in Monterey canyon.

In Bermuda, the work of Drs. Robbie Smith and Debbie Steinberg, of BBSR, and David Wingate, the Government Conservation Officer, were featured during the live broadcasts, March 16 - 27.

Bermuda´s Scientists

Robbie Smith spent much of the two weeks of the expedition underwater, monitoring Bermuda's coral reefs with the assistance of Student Researchers and Teacher Researcher Janet Slaughter. One of the 'firsts' featured in the 1998 Project had Robbie - bubble-helmeted and underwater, speaking with another scientist, also bubble-helmeted and underwater, but 3,000 miles away in Monterey Bay.

Debbie Steinberg, whose work with zooplankton and marine snow was featured in the Part 1 Video, accompanied Dr Smith on the boat, and compared findings with scientists in Monterey.

David Wingate's conservation project on Nonsuch Island was adopted by the JASON Project as the 1998 study in ecology.

Also featured in the Project was the advanced technology needed to produce the JASON broadcasts. Representing this aspect was recent Cable and Wireless employee, Aderonke Bademosi.

Bermuda´s Student Argonaut

jeffreyFifteen-year-old Jeffrey Steynor of Warwick Academy was the Bermudian student who travelled to Monterey to take part in JASON Project IX.

Jeffrey is an all-rounder who receives excellent grades for schoolwork, and freely shares his spare time with the community: he is a junior sailing instructor, altar boy, babysitter, rugby team organiser, member of the Bermuda Boys' Brigade, and volunteer with the Bermuda Junior Service League. He is also on several of his school's sports teams, and a member of the Sharks' Swim Club.

For JASON Project IX, Jeffrey learned to scuba dive. He is very proud to have been chosen as student argonaut.
