Waterstart Programs • 2005 program news release INTRODUCTION:
Waterstart summer day camps involve a balance of aquatic skill instruction, environmental investigation and team building. Waterstart's mission is to promote environmental awareness and personal growth, while fostering respect and appreciation for Bermuda's natural environment. The camps provide opportunities for exploration and discovery, and teach skills that will
prepare students for safe recreation and future employment. Waterstart's programs are broken into fun practical skill lessons as well as classroom sessions. Activities may include lessons in diving, field trips to mangrove swamps and caves, kayaking excursions, coral reef research, plankton microscope labs, cooperative group initiatives and snorkeling trips. Waterstart camps are run in collaboration with BBSR and with the benefit of BBSR faculty and graduate student researchers.
AGES and TUITION: Please refer to the 2007 Program Information for details on
individual program age requirements, skill prerequisites and tuition. Once again, there will be a 10 percent discount for alumni. Programs are divided according to experience level and not age. Students must commit for the entire length of a program. BURSARIES and SCHOLARSHIPS: Bursaries worth 60 percent of tuition costs are available for any of the non-residential programs. Download a bursary application form in PDF format. For information about scholarships for the residential SWIMMING ABILITY: All participants must be confident swimmers. There will be an untimed swim test (200 meters) and a 10-minute 'float test' on the first day. SCUBA lessons will require the student to complete an additional packet of PADI application and waiver forms. Students with a history of asthma, diabetes and certain other conditions are not usually permitted to dive. Waterstart will provide information and a form for your physician if there is any question of a student's fitness to dive.
Please print and complete the appropriate PDF forms, and submit them with your application. All forms must be received prior to the beginning of the program.
