Brief Biography

Nick Bates is a Senior Research Scientist and Associate Director of Research at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Inc. He is also an Adjunct Full Professor at Duke University and the College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware. He earned a Ph.D. in Oceanography (Chemical and Biological) from the University of Southampton (UK) in 1995. Bates’ research interests include ocean biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and dissolved organic matter; physical and biological processes influencing ocean-atmosphere gas exchange of CO2; coupling between ocean biogeochemical processes and climate variability; and influence of coral reefs and calcifying organisms on ocean carbon cycling and air-sea CO2 exchange. Bates has major responsibilities for the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) oceanographic time-series program developed under JGOFS in the late 1980's. Recently, he has contributed to the SOLAS-IMBER joint carbon implementation plan, and is a member of the IOC-SCOR International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP) scientific steering group.
