Letter from the Director:

"My experience at BIOS really pushed me to learn and challenge myself. I know I am a small fish in a big pond, so I thank you for your support. I really think if you could somehow create an institutional impact factor that measured an institution's cultivation of young intellects, quality (not necessarily quantity) of science, and educational outreach, it would be hard to surpass BIOS."
                                            - John Zablocki, Fall 2007 student

"BIOS offered me something special; a chance to conduct my own reserach project. I experienced both the challenges and rewards of being fully responsible for a project. It will be the founding experience in what I hope to be a long career in science."
                                            - Eva Kille Sawyer, Fall 2007 student

"The opportunity to study abroad at BIOS, while receiving credits toward my major and get valuable laboratory and field experience was one I could not pass up. I have been able to exclusively focus my attention on classes directly related to my major in close contact with many other scientists who are doing the research I one day hope to be doing myself."
                                            - Kelly Pennoyer, Fall 2006 student

The preceding statements from BIOS students compellingly demonstrate the important work and educational outreach of the institute. Established in 1903, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) was set up to take advantage of the ideal location for deep-ocean and coral reef research and education. Its mid-Atlantic site makes this one of only a few blue-water oceanography centres in the world, where scientific experiments can be carried out on the ocean and its inhabitants without the variable of mainland anthropogenic pollutants influencing results.

None of what we do would be possible without the exceptional support of individuals, corporations and foundations who view philanthropic giving as a vital component of their lives. This commitment to BIOS and toward a future of healthy oceans is appreciated.

As with our current publication Meridian we hope that this site will inform you of everything happening within the BIOS community and aid in sharing our cutting-edge research knowledge internationally. Thank you for your interest in BIOS.
