A wave of change is upon the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). After an extensive six-month international search BIOS is pleased to announce that Dr. William Curry will be stepping in as the new BIOS President and Director in September.
Dr. Curry currently serves as the Director of the Ocean and Climate Change Institute and Senior Scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). His research focuses on the history of climate and ocean acidification, with emphasis on how changes in ocean circulation and chemistry affected the carbon cycle and ice age climate.
The search committee included BIOS scientific and private sector Trustees, as well as representatives from the executive search and recruiting firm Korn/Ferry International, and was chaired by Dr. James Galloway, Sidman P. Poole Professor of Environmental Sciences and Associate Dean for Sciences at the University of Virginia. Dr. Galloway expressed confidence in the committee’s final decision, remarking that “Dr. Curry will build on BIOS’s achievements as a global leader in ocean science for human good.”
BIOS is somewhat familiar territory to Dr. Curry as his wife, Dr. Ruth Curry, Senior Research Specialist in Physical Oceanography at WHOI, is a frequent visiting scientist aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer where she conducts research on ocean circulation and water mass properties.
During a recent visit to BIOS, Dr. Curry was enthusiastic about beginning in his new role, saying that he “felt excited as soon as he arrived on the BIOS campus.”
