BIOS Faculty and Staff to Participate in Virtual Career Fair

On June 8, seven BIOS employees will take part in a virtual career fair hosted by the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) in honor of World Oceans Day. The event’s theme, “The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods,” is designed to help local high school and college students explore the wide variety of career opportunities that exist in fields related to ocean science.

”We are excited to have BIOS participating in the Oceans Career Fair in such a meaningful way,” said Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO.  “As a world-renowned research center, their involvement helps ensure young people have a well-rounded view of the many career opportunities in the ocean sciences sector.”

Over the course of the four-hour event, which will run from 3 to 7pm AST, participants will hear from ocean science professionals during panel discussions, then have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation during smaller break-out sessions.

BIOS marine ecologist Samantha de Putron and reef systems ecologist Eric Hochberg will participate in the panel discussions and break-out sessions to share their experiences as research scientists and teaching faculty. Other BIOS staff participating in this portion of the event include science writer, social media manager, and research technician Ali Hochberg.

“There were many stops on my path to working as a senior scientist at BIOS,” Eric Hochberg said. “I look forward to sharing my experiences and insight into becoming a marine scientist and conducting global research.”

BIOS director of education and community engagement Kaitlin Noyes and science education officer Claire Fox will host a virtual booth during the event. The team will provide information on the Institute’s education and internship programs, and answer questions regarding how these can help prepare students for future careers.

“This career fair will be a fantastic way to highlight all of the wonderful opportunities that students can pursue in Bermuda’s marine sector,” Fox said. “I am looking forward to being a part of it and sharing how BIOS can assist students in gaining valuable experiences to prepare themselves for the future.”

The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on June 8. Many countries have celebrated this day since 1992, following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.  Registration for the Bermuda event is free and can be done online at www.buei.bm
