Education - Grad & Undergrad: Courses

BIOS has been a noted resource for hands-on education for decades, with graduate, undergraduate and high school students coming from around the world to study at BIOS. Although BIOS is not a degree-granting institution, students participate in BIOS summer courses for credit from a number of prestigious institutions. Since 1997, BIOS has participated in collaborative semester sessions with accredited institutions. BIOS now has collaborative programs for undergraduate students with Princeton, University of Southampton, the University of Rhode Island, and Roger Williams University.

Participants in BIOS's Graduate Internship Program conduct research toward masters and doctoral degrees at BIOS under the supervision of BIOS resident faculty and of supervisors at their home institutions. Undergraduates participating in the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, the BIOS Volunteer Internship Program and the Bermuda Programme obtain invaluable, supervised research experience.

Semester Programs and Courses:

  • Summer Program: Summer field courses in marine science and oceanography. Scholarships available. Undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Fall Semester: Immerse yourself in a semester of marine science field courses in BIOS's unique research environment. Undergraduate level courses.
  • Spring Semester: A January - May program for undergraduates that is divided into two sessions. Students can attend both sessions (semester program) or one session (quarter/trimester program). Students accepted from around the world.

Internships:

  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates: This NSF-funded 12-week program allows undergraduate students from the United States to work on short-term research projects. The BIOS REU program is aimed at students who are considering pursuing graduate degrees.
  • Princeton-BIOS Summer Internships: Princeton University undergraduate students can spend eight weeks of the summer at BIOS working on collaborative research projects with BIOS and Princeton faculty members.
  • Graduate Internships: Students enrolled in accredited graduate degree programs can work on thesis research under the supervision of BIOS faculty members.
  • Volunteer Internships: Three- to six-month-long internships, working in the lab of one of BIOS's faculty members on an area of mutual interest. The Volunteer Internship Program is aimed at upper level undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates.
