The Graduate Internship Program at BIOS is designed to allow graduate students to pursue thesis or dissertation research. The resources and environment of BIOS are most suited to students interested in biological and oceanographic studies of subtropical, shallow-water environments, and the open ocean. Graduate interns at BIOS must be enrolled in a Ph.D. or M.S. program at an accredited university.
Graduate interns are afforded exciting opportunities. While at BIOS, you can:
- Learn about Bermuda's unique environment firsthand.
- Access BIOS's excellent, world-class facilities, including modern, well-equipped labs, the research vessel, Bank of Bermuda Atlantic Explorer, and numerous dive sites only minutes away.
- Be exposed to a wide range of faculty interests in BIOS's residential community of researchers.
- Gain teaching experience while interacting with students from all over the world, from K-13 through university, to seniors in our Elderhostel program.
- Take advantage of on-site accommodation.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The following steps will guide you through the process of applying to conduct your graduate research at BIOS.
- Match a BIOS faculty member with your research interest. The key to participating in the Graduate Internship Program is finding a faculty member at BIOS who will agree to be co-supervisor of your thesis or dissertation.
- Approach the BIOS faculty member with an informal letter of interest and a research proposal. Faculty may later request a formal letter of interest, research proposal, graduate transcripts and two letters of recommendation.
- If the BIOS faculty members agrees, check with your advisor at your home university to ensure that they support the proposal.
- Your BIOS advisor will help you to arrange accommodation at BIOS, and will discuss other administrative matters, including supporting yourself financially while in Bermuda and submitting an application to the Bermuda Department of Immigration.
The application process will take between three and six months.
