To apply for a scholarship, simply fill in the information requested on the course application form. This gives us enough details to assess your request. BIOS has a certain amount to award each year, and we do this by assessing information such as level in education, academic merit and financial need. You are encouraged to supply as much detail as you feel necessary. Travel costs must be found by the student.
Each year BIOS receives awards from various sponsors. Some sponsors place restrictions on these awards based on certain qualifications, for example nationality (see below).
Once the applications have been assessed by the summer course faculty, each scholarship request is considered. BIOS is responsible for the distribution of awards from summer course sponsors and students are requested not to contact those sponsors directly. Students can negotiate their award, and if sufficient funds are available, and the request is reasonable, the award may be increased.
Students are asked to submit a letter of thanks to BIOS in return for scholarship awards and will be required to do so during their stay at BIOS.
CABIOS scholarships are available to Canadian students.
Agouron Institute scholarships are available to students from developing countries.
UK Associates Scholarships are available to UK Ocean Science and Marine Studies students who would like to experience a field course at BIOS. Students should either be currently studying for an appropriate degree or have recently graduated. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must apply for one (or both) of the summer courses, including the pertinent information in the section titled 'Statement of Needs and Qualifications for a Scholarship' on the Summer Course Program application form. Students must indicate in this section that they are eligible for consideration of a scholarship from the UK Associates. Scholarships can be requested to cover room, board, tuition and travel costs. Please contact gerald.plumley@bios.edu with any questions.
