Waterstart programs are perfect for budding marine biologists, students who want to build their SCUBA skills, and kids who want to learn about ocean science and have fun while doing it! During a typical weeklong program, participants (aged 12 and over) will take a PADI SCUBA certification course, go on multiple research-based field trips, conduct environmental and laboratory investigations, and work on team-building during group activities and projects. With programs run at BIOS, students have access to a fleet of boats, diving/snorkeling equipment, and a wealth of scientific knowledge and information.
Dates in 2017
Dates for 2017 and the application process will be launched on January 15th, 2017.
Waterstart graduates looking to continue their education and broaden their horizons in the ocean sciences should consider applying to the Marine Science Internship program (ages 15+) or the Bermuda Program (ages 18+). These programs provide students with hands-on experience and the opportunity to work closely with BIOS faculty and staff.
Waterstart Scholarship and Financial Aid Program
The Waterstart Scholarship and Financial Aid Program was established at the launch of the first Waterstart summer camp in 2001, to ensure that any keen student could attend regardless of their financial situation. Thanks to the generosity of Waterstart families, friends and corporate sponsors, approximately 30% of our students have received financial support since then. Scholarships and bursaries have been awarded to students attending every middle and secondary school in Bermuda, and the diversity this has brought to each program has contributed to our students' overall experience as well as to the success of Ocean Academy.
Scholarships are awarded to students who have been nominated by our partner organizations; scholarships typically cover roughly 85% of the full tuition fee. For the past several years, the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s education team has recommended students who have excelled during the Middle School Voyages aboard the Spirit of Bermuda to receive a scholarship to attend Waterstart. Additionally, teachers from local middle and high schools have nominated deserving students to receive a Waterstart scholarship.
Bursaries are available for families who require financial assistance with the cost of attending Waterstart; bursaries typically cover roughly 55% of the full tuition fee. A Bursary Application Form is available for download, and should be emailed to Ocean Academy via firstname.lastname@example.org once complete.
The Waterstart Scholarship and Financial Aid Program relies on the support of families, friends and corporate sponsors, who make it possible for Ocean Academy to offer financial aid. Click here to learn more about supporting Ocean Academy.
