Specialization:
Physical oceanography, geophysics
Profile:
Dr Aucan arrived at BIOS in January 2009. He received his PhD in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii in 2005. His PhD research involved the analysis of ocean mixing and turbulence induced by internal waves, based on observations from moorings. He also established a network of wave-measuring buoys along the coasts of the main Hawaiian Islands, that is now part of the Hawaii Ocean Observing System. His post-doctoral work within the University of Hawaii Sea-Level Center included work on surface waves, and extreme wave events that can cause serious coastal flooding.
His role in BIOS involves responsibilities for the Physical oceanography aspect of the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS), as well as the implementation of a long-term observing mooring at the BATS site. Additional projects include cooperation with other BIOS chemistry and biology faculty members to investigate the connection between physical and biochemical processes, at scales ranging from the Bermuda Reef Platform to the Sargasso Sea.
