The International Center for Ocean and Human Health (ICOHH), founded by the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) in 1998, hosted a luncheon briefing
for U.S. Congressional representatives and staff on February 16, 2000 in the Capitol. The briefing was organized in cooperation with the House Oceans Caucus and the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education. BBSR
Director Dr. Anthony H. Knap moderated the briefing. Featured speakers included: Kenneth Olden, Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH, an institute of the National Institutes of Health);
former BBSR Trustee Margaret Leinen, Ph.D., assistant director, Directorate for Geosciences, National Science Foundation; and Lora Fleming, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Miami NIEHS Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences
Center. The International Year of the Ocean in 1998 focused considerable attention on the important links between healthy oceans and healthy humans. From Monsoons to Microbes, a report released by the National Academy of
Sciences in 1999, drew further attention to this important link. The issues included in the NAS report highlighted the need for development of a specific international research and training agenda. In November 1999, BBSR's
International Center for Ocean and Human Health hosted a RealVideo of the ICOHH Briefing |
