Observing the Ocean from Bermuda:
A Century of Contributions to Global Science

A free public symposium about Bermuda's vital role in global oceanography
Saturday, November 8, 2003 from 9 a.m. to noon
Hanson Hall, BBSR, Ferry Reach, St. George's

On November 3, 2003, BBSR's Weatherbird II will set sail from Bermuda for the 1,000th oceanographic cruise to Hydrostation "S," a deep-ocean sampling site 15 nautical miles southeast of Bermuda.

Started in 1954 by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution scientist Henry Stommel and BBSR Director William Sutcliffe, Hydrostation is now considered to be the longest continuous year-round investigation of any one point in the open ocean. The data collected there has played an integral role in advancing our understanding of the ocean's role in global climate.

Four leaders of the international marine science community will help BBSR celebrate this milestone with remarks about BBSR's crucial role in the world of oceanography from Bermuda's ideal mid-ocean vantage point.

Dr. Robert Gagosian, President and Director,
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Dr. John Woods, Professor of Oceanography and Head of COSMIC,
Imperial College London, United Kingdom

Dr. Robert Duce, Professor of Chemical Oceanography,
Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas
