Hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel is a professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has been a member of the faculty since 1981. His research focuses on tropical meteorology and climate, with a specialty in hurricane physics. Dr. Emanuel, one of the world's leading authorities on hurricanes, is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and two books. One of his books, Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes , gives an account of these awe-inspiring meteorological events, revealing how hurricanes and typhoons have literally altered human history, thwarting military incursions and changing the course of explorations. Dr. Emanuel explains how climates give rise to the most powerful storms in the world and tells the reader what modern science has learned about them.

Since BBSR founded its Risk Prediction Initiative (RPI) in 1994, Dr. Emanuel has been an invaluable advisor to the program's scientists, providing guidance and helping to identify research worthy of RPI funding. He will be in Bermuda in October to join insurers and fellow climate scientists for RPI's upcoming workshop on the impacts of extreme climate events.

In his lecture at BBSR on October 12, Dr. Emanuel will review what is known about the science and prediction of hurricanes and will talk about hurricanes in history, focusing on Bermuda. He will also discuss how we can go about estimating the long-term risk of hurricanes in Bermuda, finishing with whether and how global warming might affect hurricane activity.
