Network and Systems Administrator

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), Inc. is a U.S. incorporated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research and education institution employing a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people. Activities include oceanographic and marine biological research conducted by resident and visiting scientists, and university level courses on topics ranging from marine pollution to remote sensing. BIOS is taking applications for the position of Network and Systems Administrator in the IT Department.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Windows NT/2000/2003 server system administration
  • Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP desktop support
  • Unix/Linux server support
  • Voice/data network maintenance and support
  • Office and database applications support
  • PC and Macintosh hardware support

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least of four years recent IT experience.
  • Four year university degree from an accredited institution.
  • Microsoft certified systems administrator (MCSA) or equivalent.
  • Experience in a research or educational institution with knowledge of laboratory protocol and equipment in order to meet the needs of scientific researchers.
  • Must have experience with Unix/Linux operating systems (Solaris and Red Hat preferred)
  • Networking experience along with working knowledge of network systems support.
  • Programming experience beneficial [visual basic, perl, java, fortran, c++, etc).
  • Highly developed personal interaction skills and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Work with minimum of supervision, and perform projects assigned by the IT manager
  • Work some evenings, weekend & public holidays as well as on-call availability.

Oceanographic Research Technician - Oceanic Carbon Flux Studies

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS, formerly the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc.) is seeking an energetic and motivated research technician for several related studies on ocean carbon cycling and export funded by research grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation. Our research at BIOS has focused on understanding the biological, chemical and physical processes that control the ocean carbon cycle and the exchange of CO2 between the ocean and the atmosphere. The project at BIOS will involve a variety of aspects including collection and processing of sediment trap samples for elemental analysis, as well as maintenance or relevant sea-going instrumentation, and data synthesis.

The successful applicant must have at least a B.Sc. (preferably M.Sc.) degree in marine chemistry, oceanography or related subject, demonstrated technical competence and chemical analysis experience, preferably with oceanographic analytical methods. An ability to troubleshoot and maintain analytical instrumentation, requirement to participate in regular oceanographic cruises, and a high degree of organization, self-confidence and independence is expected.

Chief Operating Officer

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) (founded as the Bermuda Biological Station in 1903) is a U.S. incorporated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research and education institute employing a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people. Activities include oceanographic and marine biological research conducted by resident and visiting scientists, and university level courses on topics ranging from marine pollution to ocean genomics. BIOS is seeking a Chief Operating Officer who will be responsible for the institute's day-to-day operating activities including laboratories, housing and marine fleet. The position requires expertise in revenue growth; cash management; cost control; financial and strategic planning and monthly, quarterly and annual financial management and statutory reporting. He/she will be an important member of the BIOS Senior Management team and will report to the President/Director.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Ten years experience in Senior Management in a large operational environment with five years in an executive level position, such as General Manager or Vice President.
  • Commercially astute with proven experience of business development, strategic planning, budgeting and sales.
  • CPA an advantage.
  • Familiarity with US GAAP.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work at all levels of the organization and generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies.
  • A science background would be a great asset.
