The suite of Ocean Academy programs harnesses the power of BIOS’s research as an innovative tool to boost the educational opportunities available to Bermuda’s students and teachers.

Using the ocean, and an engagement with the natural environment, Ocean Academy thematically links the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math [STEM] for students and teachers across the island. Through these programs, BIOS delivers year-round experiential STEM training that cultivates the academic and interpersonal abilities of over 1,200 participants each year.

Mr. Turner commented, “Sol Bermuda is proud to have supported this important educational program for the fourth year running, exposing local and overseas students to STEM topics vital to understanding Bermuda’s unique marine environment, while also assisting teachers in creating an enthusiasm and appreciation for marine science which will benefit us all.”

“The BIOS Ocean Academy uses our marine science research and expertise as vehicles to deliver experiential educational activities across a diverse spectrum of Bermuda’s youth,” said Dr. Guishard. “Support from partners such as Sol Bermuda enable us to reach students from all walks of life, to help them develop an appreciation for the environment in which they live, and to grow their confidence and build analytical skill sets.”

BIOS is an independent US non-profit scientific research and educational organization and a Bermuda-registered charity. For over 100 years BIOS-based researchers and visiting scientists have worked to explore the ocean surrounding Bermuda, and address important local and global environmental issues.
