Brian Duperreault is Chairman of ACE Limited. He is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of ACE Limited, former President and Chief Executive Officer of American International Underwriters, and former Executive Vice President of Foreign General Insurance. Mr. Duperreault is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a member of the Board of Overseers of the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science of St. John's University. He serves as a director of Butterfield Bank and Tyco International Limited, and is Chairman of the Centre on Philanthropy.

Idwal Wyn Hughes, Ph.D.

Walwyn Hughes is an entomologist by training and a retired civil servant. He served many years as Director of Agriculture in Bermuda before becoming the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment and then the Ministry of Finance. Dr. Hughes was appointed to the Senate, the upper House of Bermuda's Legislature, in 1996 and continues to serve in that capacity.

Ian Strecker

Ian Strecker is a former Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Schlumberger Limited. He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from Bristol University. Mr. Strecker's career with Schlumberger began in 1961 and his worldwide executive positions have taken him around the globe to such countries as France, Australia, Libya, Nigeria and England as well as the United States.

Tony Knap received his Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from the University of Southampton, U.K. He joined BIOS as an Assistant Research Scientist in 1977 and became Director in 1986. Dr. Knap is an Honorary Professor at the University of Plymouth and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Delaware and NOVA University. Dr. Knap serves with several international organizations and has served as the chairman of the Health of the Ocean Committee for the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). He is co-chair of the Coastal Ocean Observing Panel for GOOS

Gillian M. S. Hollis (Corporation Member)

Gillian Hollis is an experienced administrator and has worked in various positions, including for a U.K. charity, in marketing and in real estate. Mrs. Hollis came to Bermuda in 1994 and has worked as Assistant to the Director at BIOS since 1996.

Mr. Philip V. Bancroft
Smiths, Bermuda 

Mr. Bancroft is CFO of ACE Limited. Prior to joining ACE Mr. Bancroft spent 20 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP where he served as Partner-in-Charge of the New York regional insurance practice. Mr. Bancroft was certified as a Public Accountant and graduated from Temple University. He currently serves on the Board of the YMCA of greater Philadelphia, is married to Denise and has three children - Philip, Kristin and Danielle.

Kenneth H. Brink, Ph.D.
Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Kenneth Brink is a physical oceanographer and senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and director of the Coastal Ocean Institute and Rinehard Coastal Center at WHOI. He is a graduate of Cornell and Yale Universities and a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and American Geophysical Union, among others. Dr. Brink is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marine Research and The Sea, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Physical Oceanography and the South African Journal of Marine Science. His service on committees, both governmental and NGOs, is extensive.

Mr. Michael Butt
Ontario, Canada

Mr. Butt is Chairman and CEO of Buttcon Limited in Canada and of Somers Construction Limited a related company in Bermuda. Mr. Butt is on the Board of Aecon Enterprises Inc., presently serving as Chairman of the Audit Committee and is a member of the Board of Governors for Trent University.

Mr. Philip Butterfield
Hamilton, Bermuda

Mr. Butterfield is CEO of the Bank of Bermuda Limited and a member of the Bank's Management Committee. Pervious posts include COO of the Bank of Bermuda and a number of senior positions with Citibank including Managing Director of the group. Mr Butterfield is Chairman of the International Business Forum, the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and the Victor Scott School Alumni Association and is a board member of the John Hopkins Medicine and the American Classical Orchestra.

Thomas M. Church, Ph.D.
Clayton, Delaware

Thomas Church has been a professor at the University of Delaware's College of Marine Studies since 1972. He is an adjunct and visiting professor at the Univ. Aix-Marseilles and has been a visiting scientist at institutions in Monaco, Nice and India. He has also been a research faculty associate in geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Church and his colleagues have studied the transport of continental pollutants to the Sargasso Sea for more than two decades.

Rita R. Colwell, Ph.D.
Arlington, Virginia

Rita Colwell is Chairman of Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc. and Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland at College Park and at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. She served as the 11th director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 to 2004 and has held many advisory positions in the U.S. Government, nonprofit science policy organizations and private foundations, as well as in the international science community. Dr. Colwell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy Arts and Sciences, and the American Philos. Association.

John W. Farrington, Ph.D.
Woods Hole, Massachusetts

John Farrington is Associate Director for Education/Dean of Graduate Studies and a Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr. Farrington's interests are in organic geochemistry and biogeochemistry, organic chemicals in the marine environment, education and environmental science-policy issues. His interaction with BIOS began as a graduate student in 1969 and continued in the 1970s with joint projects with Dr. Tony Knap, now BIOS Director. Dr. Farrington chairs the BIOS Education Committee.

Richard Ferrett
St George's Parish, Bermuda

Mr. Ferrett is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Butterfield Bank. Prior to joining Butterfield Bank in 1996 he worked in the UK as Head of Funding and Balance Sheet Management at NatWest Global Financial Markets. Mr. Ferrett is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a Member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.

Diana H. Frazier
Stamford, Connecticut

Diana Frazier is co-founder and Chair of FLAG Venture Partners, a private equity fund-of-funds designed exclusively for individuals, families and their foundations and trusts. Ms. Frazier has also been Managing Director of Kapor Enterprises, Inc. and an executive at BancBoston Ventures, becoming president in 1988. She was formerly a director of the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies and a founding advisor to the Institute for Private Investors.

James N. Galloway, Ph.D.
Charlottesville, Virginia

James Galloway is a Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia. A noted atmospheric scientist, some of Professor Galloway's regions of research include Bermuda, South America, China and Australia. He was President of the BIOS Board of Trustees from 1989 to 1996.

Linda K. Glover
Alexandria, Virginia

Educated at Duke University in chemistry and marine geology, Ms. Glover worked in ocean science and ocean policy for the U.S. Government for 38 years -- for Navy, NOAA and the National Reconnaissance Office. She published classified and unclassified research papers in antisubmarine warfare, marine geology and paleoclimatology, and Congressional testimony and major reports for the President and Congress on various ocean policy issues. She served as negotiator on U.S. Delegations to G-7 Major Maritime Powers meetings, and as U.S. Head of Delegation to NATO meetings on military oceanography. She also served as senior ocean policy analyst for the National Advisory Committee on Oceans & Atmosphere, Navy lead for Vice President Gore's Environmental Task Force, Navy lead for the National Ocean Conference of 1998, and a key author of the Cabinet's Report to the President on Ocean Policy in 1999. She was twice awarded the Navy's Superior Civilian Service Medal.

Ms. Glover now heads GloverWorks Consulting, which has worked with the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, National Academy of Sciences, Conservation International, Navy, and the National Geographic Society. She has published two books: Defying Ocean's End for Island Press in 2004; and The National Geographic Encyclopedia of Space in 2005. And she is currently serving on the Council of Advisors for the development of Google Ocean.

Rodney H. Glover
Alexandria, VA

Rodney Glover is a partner in 270 lawyer Washington, DC firm Wiley Rein, LLP where he practices in the Litigation Practice Group, the Privacy Practice Group and the Internet/E-Commerce Practice Group. Mr. Glover is also on the Executive Board of Advisors for the George Mason University Law School's Tech Center, and has served on the Virginia General Assembly Joint Commission on Technology and Science and the Society for Human Resource Management High Tech Net. Mr Glover's bar memberships include State and Federal Courts in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Wyoming as well as Federal District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States Supreme Court.

Allan W.B. Gray

Allan Gray is Executive Chairman of Orbis Investment Management Ltd. and Chairman of Orbis Investment Advisory Limited. He is the founder and a director of Allan Gray Limited, formerly Allan Gray Investment Counsel. He has served on the Boards of Governors of Rhodes University and the University of Cape Town. In 1979, he and his wife founded the Allan and Gill Gray Charitable Trust.

Michael Hamer, Ph.D.
Smiths, Bermuda

Michael Hamer is President and CEO of Camford Atlantic Limited, a company which provides advice on risk management, asset/liability management with particular expertise in hedge fund investing. Dr Hamer is also a director of the Masterworks Foundation; a member of the Advisory Board to the Insurance Admissions Committee; a director of Anchor Technology Group, a telecommunications investment company; and a director of Macquarie International Infrastructure Fund, a fund investing in infrastructure projects worldwide.

Dr. Mae C. Jemison
Houston, TX

Dr. Jemison is a member of the Dartmouth faculty in the Environmental Studies Program and is Director of The Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries at Dartmouth College. Dr. Jemison has a background in engineering and medical research and is a former NASA astronaut.

Dr. Charles F. Kennel
La Jolla, California

Dr. Kennel is Chair of the University of California, San Diego's International Advisory Board, Environment and Sustainability Initiative, and was a Founding Director of this initiative. He is the past Director, Dean and Vice Chancellor of Marine Sciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a Distinguished Professor there. He was also NASA Associate Administrator for Mission to Planet Earth, and is past Chair of the NASA Advisory Council.

James A.C. King, M.D.

James King is Chairman of the Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited. He also chairs Keytech Limited, the Bermuda Telephone Company, the Argus Group of Companies and Grotto Bay Properties Ltd. Dr. King is a graduate of the University of Toronto, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Canada, and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and the Blue Water Anglers Club.

Rebecca Knox-Byrne
Hamilton, Bermuda

Mrs. Rebecca J. Knox Byrne is a member of the New York State Bar and the Chairman of the Byrne Charitable Trust (BCT), a UK Charity founded by her and her husband in 2001. Mrs. Byrne is currently a Trustee of the London Youth Support Trust Board (LYST, UK), after serving as a Business Advisor and Mentor at the Prince's Youth Business Trust (PYBT, UK) from 1997 to 1999. Prior to joining PYBT, Mrs. Byrne worked for Lehman Brothers and Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton in London, UK. She received her B.Ed and Law Degree in Canada. Mrs. Byrne lives in Bermuda with her husband, Mark and their 4 children.

Fiona E. Luck

Fiona Luck is Executive Vice President of Group Operations at XL Capital Ltd. Before joining the company in 1999, she served as a managing director of Marsh and McLennan Inc. and then as an executive vice president at ACE Limited. Mrs. Luck is a member of BIOS's Annual Fund Committee and is also a trustee of the Masterworks Foundation.

Mr. Christopher Maybury
St George's, Bermuda

Mr. Maybury's most recent position was as CEO of IIR, the largest business to business information company in the world, specializing in conferences, trade shows, training and consultancy. Prior positions include European head of marking for News Corporation and as Chief Executive of The Times and Sunday Times.

Alan McGowan
New York, New York

Alan McGowan is President of the Gene Media Forum at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University, and is an Executive Editor of Environment magazine. He is also Vice President of Science Media Associates. Mr. McGowan is the former Director of Public Understanding of Science Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was formerly President of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information.

Raymond E. Moore
Pembroke, Bermuda

Ray Moore has established an endowment fund for BIOS to help finance research in the field of molecular biology. He has been instrumental in establishing relationships with other organizations interested in doing joint research with BIOS in this field. Mr. Moore has also been involved in raising funds for overseas students to attend BIOS summer courses.

Brian O'Hara is President and Chief Executive Officer of X.L. Capital Ltd. He formerly served as Director, Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer of Trenwick Group, Inc. He served as the first President of the Bermuda Independent Underwriters Association and has been active on several Bermuda governmental committees. He is a Director of Mid Ocean Limited, a Trustee of The College of Insurance and a Trustee of the Angus Robinson, Jr. Memorial Foundation.

Ralph E. Richardson
Sandys, Bermuda

Ralph Richardson is Executive Director of The ACE Foundation in Bermuda, which supports the local community through employee matching gifts and volunteer reward programs, educational programs and scholarships, and financial support of more than 70 registered charitable organizations per year. Mr. Richardson serves on several local boards and committees, is a corporation member of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, a past director of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, and past chairman of the Bermuda Ports Authority. He is currently Commodore at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and is author of a navigational text book, The Bermuda Boater (second edition 2004).

Sybil P. Seitzinger, Ph.D.
New Brunswick, New Jersey

Sybil Seitzinger is the director of the Rutgers/NOAA Cooperative Marine Education and Research Program. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography in 1982 and then worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia in the Division of Environmental Research. Dr. Seitzinger joined the faculty at Rutgers University in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences in 1994.

Matthew R. Simmons
Houston, Texas

Matthew Simmons is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Simmons & Company International, a specialized energy investment banking firm. Mr. Simmons is a graduate of the University of Utah and Harvard Business School. He is a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, and serves on the boards of many organizations, including Kerr-McGee Corporation, the Atlantic Council of the United States, the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (Boston), Houston Technology Center and the Center of Houston's Future. Mr. Simmons is also a past Chairman of the National Ocean Industry Association.

Gerald Simons is President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Argus Insurance Company Limited. Mr. Simons is also President of the Health Insurance Association of Bermuda (HIAB). He is a past president of the Bermuda Employers' Council and a director of various companies. Mr. Simons was a cabinet minister for 11 years and held posts including Minister of Education, Minister of the Environment, and Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs. He is President of the Bermuda Philharmonic Society and a past president of the Bermuda National Trust.

James N. Stanard, Ph.D.
Smiths, Bermuda

James Stanard is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of RenaissanceRe Holdings, a company he founded in 1993. From 1971 until 1983, Mr. Stanard held various actuarial, underwriting and management positions at INA Re, Chubb and Prudential Re. In 1983 he served as Executive Vice President of F&G Reinsurance,and in 1991 as Executive Vice President and a member of the Office of the President of USF&G. Mr. Stanard holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Lehigh University, a Ph.D. in Finance from New York University and is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Deborah K. Steinberg, Ph.D.
Williamsburg, Virginia

Debbie Steinberg is an Associate Professor at The College of William and Mary's School of Marine Science, at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. She is an associate editor of Deep-Sea Research I, the current secretary of the American Geophysical Union's Ocean Sciences Section-Biological Oceanography, and has chaired the scientific program committee for several major international oceanography meetings. Dr. Steinberg has been associated with BIOS since 1990, and was a resident scientist and coordinator of the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) at BIOS from 1995-2000.

Sherri K. Stuewer
Irving, Texas

Sherri Stuewer is Vice President of Safety, Health and Environment for Exxon Mobil Corporation. Over her 30-year career with ExxonMobil, she has held a number of positions in refining, logistics and planning. Mrs. Stuewer is a member of the Board of Trustees and the Engineering College Council at Cornell University, chairman of the Industry Advisory Board to the International Energy Agency, and a board member of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. She is a past president and board member of the Houston Regional Monitoring Corporation, a consortium of companies funding research and monitoring of Houston air quality, and has served as a board member of the Galveston Bay Foundation and the Baytown Chamber of Commerce.

Sir John Swan
Paget, Bermuda

Sir John Swan is Chairman of the Swan Group of Companies. Sir John was elected Premier of Bermuda in 1982 and served until his resignation in 1995. He was the youngest person ever to lead the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and head the Government of Bermuda. In 1962, Sir John founded John W. Swan Limited, a real estate service, property development, and savings and loan company, which for over a decade, developed some 40% of the residential property in Bermuda. For many years, Sir John has taken an active role in the development of the arts in Bermuda.

Mr. Thompson is President and CEO of Butterfield Bank. Pervious posts include President and CEO of Riyad Bank in Saudi Arabia and as a President of First Interstate Bancorp in the US. Mr Thompson received his MBA from the Wharton School of Finance and serves on several boards including the Bermuda High School, BUEI, Bermuda Hospital Charity Trust, The National Dance Foundation and the BSX.

Edward S. Trippe
Greenwich, Connecticut

Edward Trippe is President of Castle Harbour, Ltd., the development company building the Tucker's Point Club resort on the site of the former Castle Harbour Hotel. Mr. Trippe is also associated with McFarland Dewey & Co. as a senior advisor.

J. Craig Venter, Ph.D.
Rockville, Maryland

Craig Venter is founder and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute and the J. Craig Venter Science Foundation. The Venter Institute conducts basic research that advances the science of genomics, specializes in high volume genome sequencing, and explores the ethical and policy implications of genomic discoveries and advances. The J. Craig Venter Science Foundation supports both the Venter Institute and The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), an affiliated research organization led by Dr. Claire M. Fraser. Dr. Venter founded TIGR in 1992. He founded Celera Genomics in 1998 and played a leading and vital role in sequencing and analyzing the human genome.

Lady (Judy) Vereker
London, UK

Lady Vereker has a close involvement in a number of Bermudian organisations, particularly in the areas of the environment and the arts. She helped to found Polka Theatre for Children in London in 1979 and, as its Development Director until 2001, was recipient of many arts and business awards for creating innovative and mutually beneficially partnerships. Lady Vereker has also served on the Board of Eureka, The Children's Museum, Halifax, Yorkshire, The London Borough of Merton Chamber of Commerce, and the Arts Council of England's Drama Assessors. She was a founding board member of Action for Children's Arts, United Kingdom.

George A. Wardman
Paget, Bermuda

George Wardman is involved as a Director of five companies in Bermuda, including Horizons Ltd., which owns and operates three hotels. He also serves on a number of boards of different companies and organizations, including the Relais & Chateaux in Paris, France.

Katherine K. Watson
Pembroke, Bermuda

Kathy Watson has a long history of fund-raising work in Bermuda. Mrs. Watson has served on the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Executive Committee, is a past chairman of The Council Partners Fundraising Campaign and a past governor of The Council Partners Charitable Trust, and is Governor of The Council Partners Endowment Trust. She is also Chairman of The Duperreault Fellowship Committee and is an Elder at Christ Church, Warwick.

Karl Wildi
Hamilton Parish, Bermuda

Karl Wildi is a Financial Consultant and currently provides financial advice to the trustees of a number of Bermuda trusts. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Imperial Capital Corporation, a Canadian merchant bank. Mr. Wildi has held senior executive positions with major international companies, such as the Bata Shoe Organization, Warner Lambert and Dominion Securities. He serves on the advisory board of the Salvation Army and is Chairman of the Finance, Investment and Fundraising Committees, and has also served on the advisory board of the Bermuda Health Alliance.

Billy Williams is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of STW Fixed Income Management Ltd., a Bermuda-registered fixed-income management firm.

Michael Butt is Chairman of Axis Specialty Ltd. He is a director of X.L. Capital Ltd. and is also on the board of the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD). Mr. Butt has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mid Ocean Ltd., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Eagle Star Holdings, plc and Eagle Star Insurance Company, London, England, and on the Board of Directors of Farmers Insurance Group, California.

Robert E. Cawthorn
Warwick, Bermuda and London, England

Robert Cawthorn spent nearly four decades in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and animal health industries. He retired as CEO of Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. in 1995 and as Chairman in 1996. He then spent four years as a member of Global Health Care Partners of DLJ Merchant Banking Partners. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cawthorn was an executive with Pfizer International for 17 years and was the first president of Biogen Inc. He is Chairman of Actelion Ltd. and serves on the boards of Charles River Laboratories Inc., RxBazaar Inc. and certain private companies.

Hugh Lowenstein is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Shore Capital Ltd. (Bermuda). Mr. Lowenstein was previously a Managing Director, Capital Markets Group for Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities.

Margot Perot is a board member of the Dallas Museum of Art, a member of the Service League in Dallas, and a former vice-chairman of the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.
