Since 2013, BIOS has hosted a "study away" program for Furman University students entitled "Oceans and Human Health." This three-week program combines the expertise of BIOS faculty with the unique environment of Bermuda to balance lectures and case studies with active field work and laboratory practicals. Through these, students gain an understanding of the major risks and benefits of our interactions with the ocean and are introduced to technologies used to assess risk and realize potential benefits. Lecture topics include marine animal models for biomedical research, marine natural products and biotechnology, and history of natural products and drug discoveries, among others.
