Founded in 1888, the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is dedicated to scientific discovery and improving the human condition through research and education in biology, biomedicine and environmental science. Major research foci at MBL include microbial ecology, ecosystem processes, regenerative biology, sensory biology, aquaculture, and cellular dynamics.

BIOS is affiliated with MBL through the Oceanic Flux Program (OFP), led by Dr. Maureen Conte, Adjunct Scientist at the Ecosystems Center at MBL and Associate Scientist at BIOS.
